Stephen Fry cancer battle: Star reveals secret fight with prostate cancer in moving video

Stephen Fry has told of his secret battle with prostate cancer in a moving video diary.

The 60-year-old comedian and presenter revealed he was diagnosed with the disease just before Christmas after visiting his doctor for a flu jab.

Fry is now waiting on test results in the hopes of being given the all clear

He underwent an operation to remove his prostate and 11 lymph nodes.

In a 12 minute video posted on his website, he said: "Cancer, in the end, it's just one of those words that rings in your head.

"I know it's an old cliché but you don't think it will happen to you, it's always something that happens to other people."

Describing his "unwelcome and unexpected adventure", Fry told fans: "I've said the c word first off now. I had the MRI and didn't think much more of it... something rather mischievous showed up."

Mr Fry said he went to a specialist for a biopsy.

"They took a clip of living tissue from the prostate and again another wait, and I got the results the next day and yes indeed there is a cancer there," he added.

Praising doctors for acting quickly, Fry explains he underwent a major operation last month.

He says: “One option was radiotherapy but it's a long process.

"The other was to get rid of the prostate by sending little robots in through tiny holes in your tummy.

"In the first week of January, I had the operation, it seemed to go well.

"They took the prostate out, and eleven lymph nodes. It was an aggressive little bugger.

"If you're wondering why I've been out of the public eye - I'm sure you haven't - I have been keeping my head down because you want to get better without strangers - with the best of intentions - sending cards and flowers.

"You have to reply and I wasn't really up to that.

"It's a bit of a business having an operation like that, there are five holes punctured in you, it's like being stabbed five times."

He added: "To the body, it's the same traumatic effect.

"It's all pretty undignified and unfortunate."

The star told fans that he will not know the overall outcome of the operation until having his PSA (Prostate-specific antigen) levels checked but added: "For the time being I'm fit and well and happy."

Fry praised his family and husband Elliot Spencer for being "marvellous" during his ordeal.

Revealing he was treated privately, Fry, urges men to have their prostate levels checked and says: "I've been really bloody lucky".

Sharing the news with fans on Twitter, he wrote: “For the last 2 months I've been in the throes of a rather unwelcome and unexpected adventure. I'm sorry I haven't felt able to talk about it till now, but here I am explaining what has been going on.”

It comes after he stepped down as host of the Bafta Film Awards after 12 years fronting the ceremony.
