We all knew it was coming, but some viewers are rather unhappy now that it’s arrived. What are we talking about? The eighth and final season of Game of Thrones of course.

In fact, some fans have been so vocal about some of the unfolding storylines, that a rather unlikely famous voice has taken to social media to defend the show – and that person is hit horror writer Stephen King.

The Carrie creator posted on Facebook, “I've loved this last season of GoT, including Dani going bugshit all over King's Landing. There's been a lot of negativity about the windup, but I think it's just because people don't want ANY ending. But you know what they say: All good things...”

His post was met with almost 3,000 comments, many of which actually agreed with the author at least to some degree. Many stating that a happy ending was never going to be on the cards.

Others complained that the problem lay not with the writers but with the fact they had only been commissioned to create six episodes to try and conclude everything. Earlier seasons of the HBO drama had up to ten instalments to play out George RR Martin’s epic saga.

King took to Facebook after one fan created a petition on Change.org requesting that HBO remake season 8 “with competent writers”. The petition reads:

“David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have proven themselves to be woefully incompetent writers when they have no source material (i.e. the books) to fall back on. This series deserves a final season that makes sense. Subvert my expectations and make it happen, HBO!”

So far nearly 900,000 people have signed. The original poster, Dylan D of Fort Worth, Texas, recently added an update about why he created it.

“There is so much awful crap going on in the world, people like me need to escape into things like Star Wars and Game of Thrones. We fans invested a wealth of passion and time into this series. I love this story, and I, like most of you, was crushed to see how the last season (and Season 7, let’s be real) has been handled.

“The issue I have is not necessarily with what we got, it’s HOW we got there - A rushed, laughably inconsistent mess of a season fraught with cringe-inducing, arc-slaying dialogue and “everybody is stupid” syndrome.

“D&D adapted those books in the beginning and it became one of the greatest TV shows of all time. No one can doubt their talents there. But they seemingly became tired of the series and rushed to the end, thereby doing the show and its fans a great disservice.”

“In closing, I didn’t make this petition to be an entitled, whiny fan. I made it because I was immensely disappointed and needed to vent. Do I have a solution? I’ve got plenty of ideas, but no, I’m not a Hollywood writer. But you don’t need to be a mechanic to know your car is broken.”

Benioff and Weiss have won three Emmys for writing Game of Thrones.
