Stepney Green Tube closed and Mile End Road on lockdown over 'suspect package'

Passengers were evacuated from a Tube station by police on Monday after a suspicious item was found outside.

Stepney Green on the District and Hammersmith and City lines was closed at 11.45am following the security alert, Transport for London said.

Part of Mile End Road, including the cycle superhighway, was cordoned off by police.

Queen Mary University student Jordan Short said he was caught up in the evacuation.

He tweeted: “Just felt the full extent of the terrorism threat being held up and rushed out of the station by armed police.

“That's the first time I've genuinely feared for my life and was expecting the worst.”

The station waw reopened just before 1pm.

Photos showed a number of police vehicles parked outside the station with a cordon stretched across the road as specialist officers investigated.
