Steve Buscemi was left with a black eye after he was punched on a New York street in a random attack.

The 66-year-old star of Fargo and Boardwalk Empire was taken to hospital shortly after the incident on Wednesday suffering from  bruising and swelling to his face and left eye.

Buscemi was said to have been walking through Kips Bay, a neighbourhood on the east side of Manhattan when the attacker struck him at around 11:48am.

An onlooker told The New York Post, who first reported the assault: “He [Buscemi] was with a woman, and then through the corner of the window I saw him trip and fall backwards.

“He right away got up and ran in the opposite direction. I didn’t see who hit him”, said the woman, who asked to be identified only as Nat.

The New York Police Department released surveillance photos of the alleged attacker, a man with dark skin and a beard wearing a baseball cap, a blue t-shirt and black sweatpants.

Buscemi is the latest “victim of a random act of violence in the city”, his publicist told The Post in a statement on Sunday.

“He is OK and appreciates everyone’s well wishes, though incredibly sad for everyone that this has happened to while also walking the streets of New York,” they added.

Crime in New York City has been a hot topic in recent months as subway violence and street crime make major headlines. In 2024 alone three people have died from violent attacks on the New York subway system.

Buscemi is now the second Boardwalk Empire actor to fall victim to a random attack in Manhattan this year.

In March, American actor Michael Stuhlbarg was struck in the back of the neck with a rock while out for a run on the Upper East Side.

Stuhlbarg managed to apprehend his attacker after chasing him down the street following the assault.
