Steve Carell to star in Nextflix comedy based on Donald Trump's Space Force initiative

Steve Carell will star in a new Netflix comedy based on Donald Trump’s Space Force initiative.

The actor helped create the workplace series alongside writer and director Greg Daniels, who was behind the American remake of The Office.

A video announcing the series, which features music from the Richard Strauss 2001: A Space Odyssey, was posted on Twitter.

The trailer read: “On June 18, 2018 the federal government announced the creation of a 6th major division of the United States Armed Forces.

"The goal of the new branch is 'to defend satellites from attack' and 'perform other space-related tasks' or something.

"This is the story of the men and women who have to figure it out."

It comes after US President Trump announced an ambitious plan to usher in a new Space Force as a sixth branch of the military by 2020.

The Space Force would be responsible for a range of crucial space-based military capabilities which include everything from satellites enabling the Global Positioning System to sensors that help track missile launches.

Vice president Mike Pence made a speech at the Pentagon in which he described the Space Force as "an idea whose time has come."

Space Force is the latest big-star project coming to Netflix, with other original programmes featuring Idris Elba, Renee Zellweger, Henry Cavill, Gwyneth Paltrow and Toni Collette also on the way.
