Although it pains us to say it, the future of Sherlock has never been set in stone – yet co-creator Steven Moffat's latest hint has got us feeling more hopeful than ever.

We may have to wait a long, long time before we see anything new from 221b Baker Street, but Moffat has promised that the "glory days" will return.

Appearing at a panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Moffat joked that fans can expect to see more from Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson when his career has "dipped".

(We're saying nothing, Steve.)

"I'm assuming at some point we all show up again and do it when our careers have dipped," he said (via Deadline). "We will re-create our glory days back when everyone loved us."

Adding that "everything's possibly on the table," Moffat also hinted at a possible secret project involving a certain detective. You're going to need your deducing skills for this one.

Responding to questions about a fifth series of Sherlock, Moffat said: "We do have an answer but we're not telling what it is."

Executive producer Sue Vertue added: "There is something we are working on in London."

Although the BBC One series is currently on an extended hiatus, Mark Gatiss has also been dropping several clues about Sherlock's future.

Admitting he would "never say never," Mark said: "I think in a few years' time [if] we came back and said, 'Shall we do another one?' I think everyone would be very happy to."

Er, yes please.
