Stirling Tesco roof collapses amid heavy downpours as thunderstorms lash UK

Shoppers in a Tesco store in Scotland were stunned after the roof caved in amid heavy downpours.

Video showed water pouring through the roof of the supermarket in Stirling before tiles fell to the ground.

Customers were evacuated after the stream began gushing into the fruit and veg aisle, before the shop closed.

The shocking footage came after torrential rain and thunderstorms struck parts of Scotland, with 14 people being evacuated by boat from Stirling County Rugby Club.

Roads and schools across the area were closed after the flash flooding, which also hit Edinburgh.

Video captured one man stranded on his roof in deep water, with MP Christine Jardine posting a clip of water lapping at her office window.

According to the Met Office, 1.8 inches of rain fell in just three hours in the Scottish capital – over half a month’s rainfall.

The weather caused significant disruption to services across the city, with several road closures, as well as tram services being suspended.

Currie Library and Sighthill Library were closed due to the weather, with rainwater reported to be leaking into the buildings.

The downpours came as yellow weather warnings for fllooding and thunderstorms were issued across the country yesterday.

Further storms are expected on Tuesday before a heatwave hits the UK towards the end of the week.
