Meteorologists have warned Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire could be hit with more snow this week as an Arctic blast keeps the UK firmly in its icy grip. It comes after snow swept in yesterday evening and continued throughout the night to the backdrop of low temperatures.

Now both the Met Office and BBC has warned of more snow falling on Thursday. Meanwhile forecasters have said further weather warnings could be issued this week.

Previously a yellow warning for snow and ice was in place for North Staffordshire which ran from 7pm last night to 11am this morning (November 19). New snow and ice alerts have been issued for the east coast all the way from Scotland down to Suffolk. Warnings are also in place for Northern Ireland, northern parts of Scotland, and Wales.

When it will snow in North Staffordshire again

According to the Met Office and Stoke-on-Trent will see sleet on Thursday at times before light snow flurries around midday. It will also be down to -1C - but will feel more like -5C.

The BBC agrees on the date - but not the times. The Beeb, which reckons it'll be -3C even by 8am on that day, says light snow will hit at 6pm and continue through to 11pm when it's replaced with sleet. Meanwhile the forecaster says in Leek there will be snow between those times - but turning heavy at roughly 10pm until midnight when its replaced by sleet.

The Met Office however since the Moorlands will see light snow flurries for much of Thursday starting at 9am and going by the early evening.

What the Met Office has to say

Nationally and temperatures dropped down to -11.2C in Aberdeenshire while 12cm of snow has been reported in Nottinghamshire. This is down to an 'Arctic airmass' which has influenced the UK's weather.

Neil Armstrong, chief meteorologist, said: "With cold Arctic air firmly in place over the UK, continued winter hazards are likely through much of this week, with further updates to warnings likely in the coming days.

“The current focus for upcoming snow and ice risk is from later on Tuesday and overnight into Wednesday, with snow showers likely moving in off windward coasts in the north and east, as well as drifting into parts of Northern Ireland and Wales.

“In excess of 10cm of snow is possible over higher ground within the warning areas, with 1-2cm possibly settling at lower levels, which has the potential to lead to some travel disruption. Ice is an additional hazard and is likely to form quickly on untreated surfaces.”
