Forecasters are predicting rain and thunder for the Potteries as the UK is braced for a 'wild jet stream'. While North Staffordshire is basking in warm conditions and sunshine at the moment that could all change with 'days of rain' in the pipeline.

It brings yet another twist on the weather which has seen summery warmth replaced with plummeting temperatures and stormy conditions. Now The Express reports how gusts of around 40mph could be hitting the UK alongside torrential downpours.

It's all down to a 'wild jet stream' which is set to come in next week. But according to the BBC and the pleasant weather in North Staffordshire could turn this Friday (September 20).

Meanwhile according to the Met Office, the jet stream is a core of strong winds around five to seven miles above the Earth's surface, blowing from west to east. Peak gusts of wind are predicted to hit across much of Britain - from the southern coast right up to the Scottish Highlands.

Weather maps are also showing some heavy rain. Weather expert Jim Dale, senior meteorologist and founder of British Weather Services, said the jet stream will have "powered up" by next week - most notably September 25.

He said: "The jet stream has powered up by then following an Arctic blast out of Greenland a few days earlier. At the minute any 60-70mph storm force winds are likely to be aimed well to the north of the Scottish mainland, which is not that unusual at this time of year. However, it's a long way off and steerage could easily alter."

"Certainly we won't be holding on to the high pressure sedate weather beyond this weekend and given the lows will then be rolling in off a relatively warm Atlantic I think we can all expect a spell of wet and windy weather in the days prior to and after the September 25."

In its latest forecast the BBC reckons it will be pleasant in the Potteries for the coming days with highs of 20C on Thursday. But come Friday and there could be thunder in the afternoon after a misty start.

While Saturday is looking dry, thunder could hit on Sunday with rain every day next week apart from Thursday. From Sunday and the warmest it'll be will be around 16C.
