The Polish Ministry of Defense said migrants threw stones at security forces during clashes at the Poland-Belarus border on Tuesday, November 16.
Footage released by the ministry shows objects being thrown at the border fence by crowds, with Polish security forces responding with water cannon and tear gas.
The ministry said migrants had tried to destroy the border fence and thrown stones at security personnel.
The ministry also said the migrants were “equipped with stun grenades” that they said had been provided by the Belarusian services. This has not been independently confirmed.
The clashes come one day after the EU agreed to broaden its scope for imposing sanctions on Belarus, allowing any individuals or entities “that facilitate illegal crossing of the EU’s external borders” through Belarus to face sanctions.
A spokesman for the Belarusian foreign ministry said accusations of orchestrating a migration crisis were “absurd.” Credit: Polish Ministry of National Defense via Storyful
