Storm Arwen: Yorkshire pubgoers face fourth day snowed in as temperatures drop to -8 celsius

Pubgoers in the Yorkshire Dales are facing their fourth day snowed indoors, as Storm Arwen continues to impact power supplies and infrastructure across the UK.

The Met Office recorded an overnight lowest minimum temperature of -8.7C in Shap, a village in Cumbria, making it the coldest night of autumn so far.

The Met forecast that Monday will see icy stretches and fog patches, with rain and snow in the north-west of England and snow in Scotland.

Some 61 people have been snowed inside The Tan Hill Inn in the Yorkshire Dales, Britain's highest pub, since Friday, with the pub's manager having told the Telegraph on Sunday that guests and staff had become one "big happy family" over the weekend.

Staff at the pub have been entertaining guests with karaoke, quizzes and board games and a Sunday roast, with an Oasis tribute band also being stuck on-site.

Landlady Nicola Townsend told the BBC's Radio 4 Today programme: "They're loving it. We've had pub quizzes, lots of board games and card games. We were supposed to have a best dressed Snowman competition but the temperature has just been too cold to go out there, so if we get stuck today, I think that might be on the agenda for today.

"We're hoping people can get away [today], but I've still got to call the Highways this morning - we usually phone them between half 7 and 8 o'clock to get an update because we believe the power cable has now been rectified, so the plough should be able to get through to us today - fingers crossed, people will be going home.

"We've all become really good friends, all the people that are here. It's a bit of a cliche but we came as strangers and they're leaving as friends. We're talking about doing a reunion."

The landlady joked that the group had renamed the tribute band Snowasis, from Noasis, and said guests had enjoyed access to showers and makeshift beds.

Storm Arwen was given the Met Office's highest red level storm warning, after three men were killed by falling trees during the storm.

Headteacher Francis Lagan died in Antrim, a pick-up driver was killed in Aberdeenshire and another man was killed in Cumbria.

In Scotland, nearly 40,000 people were still without electricity on Sunday, with large numbers also affected in England and Wales.

Schools in Aberdeenshire will remain closed on Monday and Tuesday, while police in north east Scotland have declared a major incident and warned the storm's disruption could last several days.

NHS Grampian said all of its Aberdeenshire vaccination centres would be closed on Monday.
