Weather maps are predicting that Devon should brace for yet more rainfall heading into tomorrow (Sunday) - as Storm Ashley is set to sweep across the south-west coast throughout much of the morning.

While the weather front is set to have the biggest impact on the Republic of Ireland - and thus has been named by Met Éireann - the UK will not go unscathed, with wind gusts of almost 50mph expected to hit parts of Devon and Cornwall.

A yellow weather warning for strong winds is currently in place across Scotland and large parts of the north-west of England, as well as down the west coast of Wales, effective from 3am until 11.59pm on Sunday.

And in Devon, areas in the south of the county are likely to be worst affected, with Plymouth, Tavistock, and Salcombe expected to see as much as 16mm of rainfall an hour during the early hours of the day, from around 6am.

Meanwhile, in the north of Devon, areas such as Barnstaple and Ilfracombe can expect up to 8mm of rainfall an hour at around 6.30am, and similar again at around 9.30am.

Exeter is forecast to be less battered by rain, with the heaviest rainfall over the city expected to be 2-4mm, at around 7.45am, and then again at 9.45am. The rain is expected to clear from Devon by midday on Sunday, moving north-east over Somerset.

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist, Tony Wisson, said: "Storm Ashley will bring strong winds for most of the UK on Sunday before it clears on Monday, with a chance of some disruption across parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland, Northwest England, and West Wales.

"A period of especially strong winds are expected on Sunday afternoon and evening in western Scotland, where gusts could potentially reach 70-80mph in exposed areas, and an Amber warning for winds has been issued here.

"More generally, 50-60 mph are possible in some inland areas in other parts of the warning area, especially Northern Ireland and western Scotland, and perhaps up to 60-70 mph along exposed coasts and hills. These strong winds in conjunction with high spring tides, may cause some disruption."
