Storm Bert chaos sparks wave of cancellations in Gloucestershire

A number of events across Gloucestershire have been cancelled due to the adverse weather conditions brought by Storm Bert. National Grid released a statement after power cuts were reported across the South West as the strong winds and rain battered the region .

Earlier this morning, the M48 Severn Bridge closed due to the strong winds, with drivers using the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge as a diversion. As the morning progressed, news broke of event cancellations across Gloucestershire.

The Farmers’ Market, which would have been held at Cirencester Market Place, was cancelled yesterday evening due to the weather. Auntie Caroline’s Pickled Onions & Chutneys , who would have been at the market, posted on Facebook: “Tomorrow’s Farmers’ Market has been cancelled. I’ll be restocking the online shop all weekend, which can be posted or collected from the next market (December 14).”

It followed news that the Christmas Gift Market, also at Cirencester Gift Market, was cancelled due to the weather. It would have taken place tomorrow.

The Tewkesbury Parkrun was also cancelled this morning due to overnight rain, which had left the course “quite slippery” and the wind making navigating the course more dangerous. Tewkesbury Parkrun posted on Facebook: “Tewkesbury parkrun CANCELLED.

“Overnight rain has left the course quite slippery and the wind is making navigating it more treacherous. For the safety of both park runners and volunteers we will save it for another day.”

The Suffolks Christmas Market in Cheltenham was also cancelled later this morning due to high winds. Glosinfo posted: "Sorry to report the The Suffolks Cheltenham Christmas Market is cancelled tomorrow due to the high winds.

"The safety of everyone with regard to the stalls in the wind is the most important thing. Santa and his elves will still be wandering around though so keep your eyes open and do visit the local shops anyway."

Some events did take place today despite the weather, including the Gloucester City Parkrun. Taking a decision at 7am today, the organisers confirmed that the parkrun would go ahead.
