Arctic winds have blighted London this week as temperatures have dropped below freezing on consecutive nights. Despite the cold, these conditions have mostly come alongside sunny weather.

But this is set to come to an end this weekend as a storm approaches the UK. Storm Bert - the second named storm of the season - will bring heavy rain and snow, leading to the Met Office issuing several weather warnings for Saturday and Sunday.

An amber warning is in place in central Scotland as forecasters expect heavy snow to blanket the region. Other parts of Scotland have been issued wind, rain and snow warnings; along with northern England.

In southern and southwestern England, an ice warning is in place until Friday morning. A rain warning will then replace this over Saturday and Sunday as Storm Bert crosses the Irish Sea.

Met Office warning maps suggest London will not be as badly affected by Storm Bert compared to most other parts of the UK. This being said, the weather forecast sets out a grim picture this weekend.

Londoners can expect cool conditions overnight (Thursday, November 21) as the mercury drops to 0C. We can then expect a cool, but sunny Friday with highs of 6C before dusk brings the mercury back down to 1C.

Rain is then expected all day on Saturday, with forecasters suggesting it will be heaviest between 9am and 6pm. Sunday will then bring more of the same with showers expected throughout the day.

Despite the rainy conditions, Londoners will be glad to know the weekend will see temperatures shoot back up to 13C on Saturday and 15C on Sunday.

These slightly warmer conditions are set to stick around early next week as cloudy and sunny conditions return. The BBC says the return of warmer temperatures is due to a switch of wind direction.

As Storm Bert moves in, it will change from the cold northerlies to the miler south-westerlies.
