Storm Bert mapped as 26-hour wall of rain on way to West Midlands

Storm Bert is set to bring heavy rain to parts of the UK, the Met Office has warned. Forecasters have put snow and ice warnings in place in parts of Scotland this weekend.

And in the Midlands, hours of rain is expected on Saturday, November 23. According to a forecast for Wolverhampton, this will begin at 4am and carry on until around 6am on Sunday, November 24.

Jason Kelly, Met Office chief meteorologist, said that the storm will bring heavy snow to some northern areas. He added: "Storm Bert starts to arrive overnight on Friday and into Saturday, initially over Northern Ireland.

"As we go through the first part of Saturday morning, it will start to show its hand across Scotland, north Wales and northern England, with the potential for some heavy snowfall, especially over higher ground. Warnings are in place, including an amber warning for snow and ice for parts of Scotland."

A spokesperson for Met Office added: "Storm Bert is also expected to bring heavy rain through Saturday and Sunday, especially in southern and western parts of the UK." Disruption is expected in parts of the UK throughout the weekend.

The Met Office forecast for West Midlands is as follows:

Today (Friday, November 22):

Wintry showers bring the risk of icy stretches during the morning, mainly across northern counties, before gradually fading during the day. Sunny spells for many in the afternoon. A cold day, though winds easing later. Maximum temperature 5 °C.

Tonight:

Dry but chilly evening. Cloud building overnight ahead of Storm Bert's arrival with rai becoming widespread and hill snow over the Peak District. Patchy frost abating as the rain arrives. Minimum temperature -1 °C.

Saturday, November 23:

Storm Bert bringing a widely unsettled and potentially disruptive day with heavy, persistent rain and gales around higher ground. Turning noticeably milder, resulting in a rapid melt of lying snow. Maximum temperature 13 °C.

Outlook for Sunday, November 24 to Tuesday, November 26:

Rain clearing through Sunday with showers and brighter spells on Monday and Tuesday. Strongest winds easing but staying blustery. Mild on Sunday then temperatures returning to the seasonal average.
