Strong gusts of wind are expected to sweep over Surrey as Storm Éowyn batters the country. The Met Office has now issued a yellow weather warning for entire south east, including Surrey.

From 5am in the morning until 3pm on Friday, January 24, the storm "will bring a spell of strong winds" with gusts of up to 50mph hitting the county. Those travelling on Friday morning have been warned to expect delays on the roads and railways, flights including those from Heathrow and Gatwick airports may also be affected. The Met Office has also warned of the possibility of a short term loss of power and other services being affected by the storm.

Initially Surrey was not included in any weather warnings, despite facing strong winds, however the Met Office updated it warning on Wednesday, January 22 to include the whole of the SE and London.

A Met Office spokesperson said: "As Storm Éowyn moves across the northwest of the UK on Friday, south to southwesterly winds will strengthen with gusts of 40-50 mph likely for a time, perhaps higher on exposed coasts and hills, before easing through the afternoon."

The area which is set to face the brunt of the storm is south of the county, with towns such as Haslemere set to experience winds at heights of 57mph. However, the rest of Surrey is not far behind with Guildford expected to be hit by 56mph, Woking 54mph, Redhill 55mph gusts and Weybridge 54mph. These winds are expected to calm down across the county by 3pm.

In light of these strong winds and heavy rainfall, the Met Office has advised people to: "give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary."

The north of the country is set to bare the brunt of the storm. Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Mike Silverstone said: "The strongest gusts are likely to be felt across parts of Northern Ireland, northern England, northwestern Wales and western Scotland, where exposed sites could get gusts in excess of 80mph, which has the potential to cause impacts for those in these areas. There will also be some heavy rain, bringing some unpleasant conditions to end the week."

The gusts are set to lose their strength going into Saturday (January 25) however further wet and very windy weather could be expected if another area of low pressure looms over the UK. Additionally much of Surrey should expect more rain on Sunday (January 26) and Monday (January 27), with towns such as Haslemere predicted to experience heavy showers on the Sunday.
