Storm Éowyn flips HGV on its side sparking A689 road closure

A HGV has been flipped onto its side sparking the closure of the A689 near Wynyard.

High winds from Storm Éowyn are battering Teesside on Friday after the Met Office issued an Amber weather warning for the weather phenomenon. The A689 eastbound near Wynyard has been closed due to the lorry overturning, and in Stockton a road was closed due to a fallen tree.

The area near the A19 flyover has also been closed in both directions to high-sided vehicles.

A spokesperson for Cleveland Police said: "The A689 eastbound near Wynyard is currently closed from the Stockton Road roundabout (A689) to the A177 due to an overturned heavy goods vehicle. Drivers are being urged to avoid the area whilst the incident is dealt with."

Police and workmen are also currently on the scene at Durham Road in Stockton, close to the Mile House junction, where the tree has blocked the road.

A spokesperson for Cleveland Police said: "One lane is currently closed on Durham Road in Stockton between the Mile House pub (junction of Darlington Lane) and Hardwick Road due to a fallen down tree.

"Officers are currently on the scene alongside colleagues from Stockton Council, but one carriageway will remain closed until the tree is cleared from the road. Please avoid the area where possible. Thank you for your patience."

There has also been a report that a tree has been blown down blocking McMullen Road in Darlington at the junction of Lingfield Point.

Travel guide Inrix says the A19 in both directions is closed to high sided vehicles due to strong winds from A66 to A1046 Haverton Hill Road (Portrack Interchange). And, the A66 in both directions is closed due to strong winds between A685 (Brough, Durham) and A1(M) J53 Scotch Corner (Scotch Corner).

The Met Office weather warning is in effect until 9pm tonight residents can expect widespread gusts of 60-70mph during the day in some areas, potentially reaching up to 90mph along coastal areas and hilly regions.
