The Met Office has issued a new amber weather warning for wind which includes Merseyside. The alert comes after Storm Éowyn became the latest storm named by the weather agency.

The amber weather warning is in place on Friday, January 24, it is expected to bring very strong winds and widespread disruption. The alert is in place for 15 hours from 6am until 9pm.

The storm is set to batter parts of the UK, with yellow and amber warnings covering most of the country. The Met Office state: "Storm Éowyn will move across the northwest of the UK on Friday, clearing to the northeast on Friday night.

"This will bring a spell of very strong west to southwesterly winds, with peak gusts of 60-70 mph fairly widely inland, 70-80 mph in some areas, and 80-90 mph along more exposed coasts and hills (perhaps even higher in a few locations)."

People have been warned to expect power cuts, which have the potential to affect other services such as mobile phone coverage. Road, rail, air and ferry services are likely to be affected, with longer journey times and cancellations possible. The Met Office has warned some roads and bridges will close as a result of the windy conditions.

As the wind gets stronger, there is a chance that damage to buildings and homes could occur, with roofs blown off and power lines brought down. Injuries and "danger to life" could also occur from flying debris, as well as large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties.

The Met Office has offered advice for how to stay safe during the amber alert for wind. They say: "Prepare to protect your property and people from injury. Check for loose items outside your home and plan how you could secure them. Items include; bins, garden furniture, trampolines, tents, sheds, and fences."

The weather agency has also suggested people prepare for power cuts in advance by getting torches and other essential items. Windy weather can cause delays and make travel conditions dangerous so keeping up to date with the latest travel changes will make journeys easier.
