Storms and 'heavy showers' on the way in the North East with Met Office warning in place

The North East is set for a wet and stormy start to September but things should brighten up by the end of the week.

A yellow weather warning for thunderstorms which was originally put in place for Sunday has been extended until 23:59 on Monday. However, Tuesday is expected to be the wettest day of the week, with heavy and frequent showers.

The back end of the week is expected to be drier, but could be cloudy and overcast - though there will be some sunny intervals on Thursday. At this point, the weekend is mostly expect to be cloudy and overcast.

For Monday, the Met Office predicted: "Cloudy start, with further heavy showers, perhaps thundery, before clearing north through the morning. Cloud breaking later in the day, to give some afternoon bright or sunny spells.

"Feeling humid. Maximum temperature 21 °C."

The outlook from Tuesday to Thursday is: "A changeable period with showers at times, these heaviest and most frequent on Tuesday, with longer drier spells developing as the week goes on. Average temperatures for early September."

Regarding Monday's extended yellow weather warning for thunderstorms, the Met Office said that "many places will miss" the storms, which are projected for much of the UK. However, where they do hit they are likely to cause some disruption.

The Met Office warned: "Some places may see 30 to 40mm of rain fall in less than an hour and perhaps over 60-80mm in one or two places," with lightning strikes and hail posing additional hazards.

Friday, September 6: Highest temperature, 22°C, lowest temperature, 8°C. Overcast.

Saturday, September 7: Highest temperature, 23°C, lowest temperature, 9°C. Overcast.

Sunday, September 8: Highest temperature, 23°C, lowest temperature, 8°C. Overcast before a cloudy evening.
