Stranger Things could explore Chief Hopper’s back story spin-off using new book

As weird, yet wonderful Stranger Things makes its way back to our screens (and hearts), the author of a brand new Chief Jim Hopper spin-off book has teased that a spin-off could easily be on the cards.

In an exclusive interview with Metro.co.uk, Adam Christopher has revealed that he wrote his novel – named Stranger Things: Darkness on the Edge of Town: The Second Official Novel – in a format that makes it easy to adapt to television.

“The book begins in New York and includes the blackout,” Adam explained. “When I was writing it, I did have in mind the episodic structure. So you can imagine if they did the eight episodes like in Stranger Things, the blackout would be the key moment of episode seven and eight.

“So that pacing and structure of the story would lend itself to an adaptation. Also, for fans because they have to have that ‘Stranger Things feel’, it does feel like you’re watching a book.”

Previously the author also spoke to Metro.co.uk about the novel’s exploration of Hopper’s backstory, and his opportunity to delve even deeper than the show does.

“We know from the TV show that he was in New York because Eleven finds a box underneath the floor in season two. This is the first chance we’ve really had to look at his family life before everything changed,” he said.

“Hopper’s life is pretty much in two halves, before Vietnam and after Vietnam, which was a huge part of his life. When Sara died, that became ancient history. It became something lost in time. This is the first time we’ve seen before Sara’s death.”

Stranger Things bosses Matt and Ross Duffer have also dropped major hints at what we can expect from the third instalment by divulging their key movie inspirations.
