'Strangest thing in Benidorm' where you can win big money by watching donkey poo
Benidorm has once again embraced its "strangest tradition" over the weekend, with residents and holidaymakers keenly awaiting the chance to observe a donkey defecating.
The peculiar event known as 'Caga de la Burra', which translates roughly to 'Poo from the Donkey', took place yesterday (Sunday, September 15) in various localities in Spain's Alicante region.
Local YouTuber 'Benidorm by Ana' delved into the details of this unusual festivity on her channel, labelling it "one of the strangest [traditions] in the entire world". Ana detailed how participants encircle a donkey which ambles freely within an assigned space. This zone is broken down into small, numbered sections.

The crowd places €10 (£8.43) wagers on these specific areas, hoping their chosen square will be where the donkey happens to relieve itself. They stand to win a hefty €1,000 (£843). In cases where the donkey's deposits spread across multiple squares, the largest share of droppings determines the victor.
This celebration first started in Benidorm in 2014 and, following a pause due to the Covid-19 pandemic, resumed triumphantly in 2021. The event is very popular, with all 500 numbered plots being snapped up during this year's iteration.
Benidorm's mayor presided over the festivities, which also included live music, bars, and food outlets. The contest's tagline is: "Never has a s**t given you so much."
This year's festivities have been hailed as a triumph, with the event's organisers taking to Instagram to confirm its return next year. They shared: "We would like to express our most sincere thanks to all the people who joined and collaborated in this traditional celebration. From those who helped with the organisation, to those who participated and enjoyed with us. Each one of you was a fundamental part of making this event a success.
"Thanks to the councillors, neighbours and friends who did their bit, and of course, to the donkey for being the star of the party. See you next year to keep this beautiful tradition alive!"
