New on-street parking rules aiming to boost the turnover of car parking spaces on 12 West Bridgford streets have been approved. The current lack of any parking restrictions on most of the roads concerned means that spaces are not becoming available often enough for other drivers to use, Nottinghamshire County Council said.

The authority also said its current regime is "incongruous" with the parking offered by Rushcliffe Borough Council. The new plans, expected to be implemented by early next year, would see drivers only getting 30 minutes free before paying an initial £1.50, rising to £6 for more than four hours.

Among the streets affected is Bridgford Road, where there is currently no parking restriction. Consultation on the proposals began with the public from September 2 before closing on October 10.

Councillor Neil Clarke, the county council’s Cabinet Member for Transport and Environment, said: “We would like to thank all the residents, shoppers, local businesses, and partners for their feedback all through the process of our on-street parking consultation. We are confident that increasing the number of parking 'slots' available in a day can help bring in a greater number of visitors to enjoy the retail and hospitality offers which will ensure the long-term vitality of the town, indeed none of the businesses responding to the consultation objected to our plans.

"The 30-minute free parking will encourage that footfall, with people popping into West Bridgford for their shopping or services. Please be assured that we have listened. We will continue to monitor parking in the town centre and the wider area very closely and will measure this alongside the needs of residents.
