The One Show played host to a heartwarming reunion between Strictly Come Dancing's Angela Rippon and Kai Widdrington on Friday (11 October).

Set to celebrate her 80th birthday this weekend, the legendary broadcaster spoke to presenters Alex Jones and Roman Kemp about her storied career before a "breaking story" interrupted their conversation.

In a pre-recorded montage, Angela's 2023 professional dance partner Kai was seen stylishly spinning through the BBC news building in London, taking in various murals of his dear friend only to turn up on set at The One Show.

Having grabbed a bouquet of flowers from one of the crew on his way over to Angela, who he lovingly embraced, Kai was then quizzed on what their friendship means to him.

"Oh gosh, I mean there's 51 years age gap between the two of us but we feel like we've known each other for 51 years. We said that when we departed the [Strictly] competition in Blackpool but it really has stayed that way ever since," he replied. "We speak nearly every day. I think today's the only day that we haven't spoke!"

Apparently, he was going to wish Angela the best of luck ahead of appearing on The One Show, but feared she might've spied some sort of plot to surprise her.

Just before the credits rolled, members of boybands Busted and McFly serenaded Angela with a quick birthday song as Tom Fletcher handed over a star-topped cake.

Fletcher, Dougie Poynter, Harry Judd, Matt Willis, Charlie Simpson and James Bourne were guests at the front of the programme to promote their Battle of the Bands-style joint tour in 2025.

The One Show airs weekdays on BBC One at 7pm.
