Strictly Come Dancing 2018 contestants: Dr Ranj Singh of This Morning is the next celeb confirmed for line up

Dr Ranj Singh is swapping his scrubs for sequins as the next celebrity confirmed for Strictly Come Dancing.

The TV doctor was unveiled on Thursday’s This Morning, on exactly the same stage as former contestant Ruth Langsford announced her appearance last year.

Singh told Langsford and co-host Eamonn Holmes: “Oh gosh, thank you. I'm shaking. It's been really, really recent but, even so, it's been so hard because you are sworn to secrecy. I have had to keep it quiet - if I have lied to you, I am sorry!

"It's such a big deal and such a wonderful thing to be part of. I don't know why I was Goats cheese. I have been trying to go to the gym to get a little bit fitter, and everything hurts."

"My friends would describe me as a cross between ‘dad dancing’ and a go-go dancer… I do like to dance, but I do it for fun, I’ve never been formally trained or anything. I’m super excited and I really want to learn to dance properly. I’m such a fan of the show."

In a press release confirming his latest role, Singh said: "I'm so overwhelmed and excited to be part of this wonderful show. It's an absolute dream come true for me! I've been a massive fan for so long, and I can't quite believe this is happening, but I'm going to give it my best shot.

"Anyone that knows me knows that I love a bit of sparkle... so bring on the glitter! I can’t wait!”

The fan-favourite doctor is the seventh name to be announced for this year’s series, following cricketer Graeme Swann last night.

Ashes-winner Swann - code name Gorgonzola - joined BBC Radio 2’s Angela Scanlon and OJ Borg to chat all things sequins ahead of his dance floor debut next month.

Swann said: "I don’t know anybody else who is on it except for those who have been announced. It's great.

"[My worst nightmare] is getting it wrong. I've never been taught how to dance, I don't know anything. If I get that wrong, that would be the end of the world for me."

He added: “I spent my career enjoying the excitement of performing in front of crowds and cameras.

"It’s a bizarre pressure that makes you sink or swim and I’ve missed it since having to retire from cricket.

"I’m hoping to follow in the footsteps of the cricketers who’ve come before me who’ve either won the whole thing or had an absolute ball on the show."

Swann will be the fifth cricketer to compete in the popular BBC show, following 2006 and 2007 winners Darren Gough and Mark Ramprakash, Phil Tufnell in 2009 and Michael Vaughan in 2012.

They join Capital DJ Vick Hope, campaigner and presenter Katie Piper, YouTube vlogger Joe Sugg, actor Danny John-Jules and Steps star Faye Tozer in this year’s line-up.

Strictly Come Dancing returns to BBC One later this year.
