Strictly Come Dancing fans were “in tears” as Lauren Steadman and AJ Pritchard made their dance floor debut on Saturday night.

The young pair performed the Waltz to I’m Kissing You, by Des’ree, as they took their first steps as a couple during the opening live show.

The athlete only had two days of training after returning from winning gold at the World Championships in Australia.

And viewers were quick to hail her “beautiful” performance after so little training, complimenting her frame and style.

One wrote: “I am in tears. I loved that waltz. #Strictly.”

While another said: “My first big fat tears. That was beautiful #Strictly.”

“Beautiful dance by Lauren and AJ. Ones to watch! #strictly,” gushed somebody else.

Craig Revel Horwood told her it was "impressive, darling", while Dame Darcey Bussell praised her for her "control", adding: "You're obviously good under pressure, really good start."

Shirley Ballas said she was a "beautiful princess with beautiful chemistry" while Bruno Tonioli said the dance was "floaty, fluid, romantic, like watching Strictly's Romeo and Juliet".

The couple were third out at Elstree, following Danny John-Jules and Amy Dowden opening with a Foxtrot and Kate Silverton and Aljaz Skorjanec taking on the Cha Cha Cha.

Strictly Come Dancing continues on BBC One.
