Casualty actor Charles Venn has sent Dr Ranj back to his day job in A&E after Strictly Come Dancing’s closest dance off of the series so far.

The real-life doctor became the sixth celebrity to be voted out of the competition in a battle against TV medic Charles, who plays Jacob Masters in the BBC emergency room drama.

Neither celebrity had been in the bottom two on the leaderboard, but despite beating Kate Silverton and Danny John-Jules in the judges’ scores, a lower viewer vote put them both in trouble of being sent home.

Shirley Ballas, Bruno Tonioli, Darcey Bussell, and Craig Revel Horwood struggled over who to save, with Craig opting for Dr Ranj and his partner Janette Manrara’s Samba to Freedom 90.

But hearts broke amongst Strictly fans when the CBeebies star was sent home by Shirley, Bruno and Darcey all choosing to save Charles and his partner Karen Clifton for their Viennese Waltz to Piano Man.

Head judge Shirley said: “For me it’s a heartbreaking decision, because I think both couples have done amazingly well.”

Dr Ranj said of his time on the show: “I can’t express how much this has meant to me. I have made friends for life. I’ve done something that I only could have dreamed of.

“I just want to say to anyone who ever dreams of this, you can, you really can, because I’m here and I have done it.”

Janette added: “He is an incredible human being for what he does as an actual job. He is there saving children’s lives and he is a special, special man.

“On this show you get to celebrate people who have never done something like this before and for me, Ranj is the epitome of what Strictly Come Dancing is about.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better friend, a better partner, or a better series, I love you so, so much.”

Although they were saved by the judges, it was also a tough night for Charles and Karen as it was the third time they found themselves in the dance off based on the viewer vote.

Despite being one of the most talented celebrity dancers in the series, something just isn’t connecting with the audience, so they must already be worrying about week eight.

Meanwhile, Jess Glynne was this week’s singer tasked with keeping a straight face while the pros expressed her song through the medium of dance, but people weren’t sure about her shiny suit.

We’re now over the halfway point of Strictly, so expect to see the competition pick up pace from next Saturday.
