Strictly Come Dancing’s wardrobe department has outdone itself for movie week, with fans in hysterics over Simpsons, Hercules and gnome outfits.

Movie week is always an early series tradition for the celebrity dance show and a chance for costume designers to go over the top with their creations.

This year certainly did not disappoint - and viewers particularly couldn’t get over the Simpsons makeover for Max George and Dianne Buswell.

Singer George and his partner Buswell were covered head to toe in yellow make-up, with pro dancer Buswell sporting a tall blue Marge Simpson wig.

They weren’t the only couple to have viewers in stitches, as Jamie Laing’s Hercules costume, complete with flowing curly locks, was the funniest moment of the night.

Laing showed he didn’t mind being the butt of the joke as he played up to the character, which earned him 23 points.

And leaderboard favourite HRVY and his partner Janette Manrara also appeared to have drawn the short straw for theme week with Gnomeo and Juliet outfits.

For once, HRVY didn’t get universally glowing praise from the judges, but people thought his outfit might have something to do with it.

However, Maisie Smith and Caroline Quentin both had an easier time of it from wardrobe, with beautiful outfits for their Frozen and Gypsy inspired dances.

The show opened with the pros dancing a Bond-themed routine, which began with Gorka Marquez wading through water in tribute to Daniel Craig.

Introducing the live show, host Tess Daly acknowledged this week’s passing of Sir Sean Connery.

She said: “We can’t do a number like that without mentioning Sean Connery, the original big screen Bond - our thoughts go out to his family.”

Fans of Strictly were very happy to see the return of theme weeks, after last week saw the show cancel their traditional Halloween-themed episode after deciding it fell too early in this year’s postponed competition.

Strictly Come Dancing continues with the results show on Sunday at 7.25pm on BBC One.
