Strictly Come Dancing fans have criticised Ashley Roberts for her "sulky" facial expressions after the Pussycat Dolls star found herself in the dance-off for the third time in a row.

Roberts and dance partner Pasha Kovalev ended up in the bottom two on Sunday’s show, despite earning a perfect score for their American Smooth.

The pair eventually beat Paralympian Lauren Steadman and her partner AJ Pritchard to win a place in next week’s final, but viewers were quick to pick up on Roberts’ less than thrilled expression when she and Kovalev were congratulated by hosts Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daly.

While fellow finalists Faye Tozer, Joe Sugg and Stacey Dooley waved happily to the camera, the singer appeared to barely raise a smile despite her success in the dance-off.

“I was feeling relatively neutral about Ashley, but she looked so sulky and childish tonight… great way to win over the audience,” one viewer wrote on Twitter.

“What was wrong with Ashley’s face?” asked another. “Everyone’s so happy to be in the final smiling, laughing and waving.”

Others were quick to defend Roberts, pointing out that the singer might be feeling “dejected” after failing to win over the public for three weeks on the run.

“The look on Ashley’s face at the end of the show, so dejected, the public can be so cruel," another fan wrote.

Posting on Instagram after the show, Roberts appeared unperturbed by the negative comments. “What a weekend," she captioned a photo of her performance. “From 4 10s to having to do the dance off for the third time in a row. I have definitely gotten to experience the whole spectrum of the Strictly adventure. And I’m grateful for it all!”

Strictly Come Dancing is on BBC One, Saturday at 6:35pm
