Strictly's Wynne Evans and Katya Jones have set the record straight amid the fallout over their "silly" joke on Saturday night, with Jones insisting that people have "got it wrong".

Opera singer Evans and pro dancer Jones have been in the news after Strictly viewers spotted what some thought was an awkward exchange between the pair, with Jones turning away and refusing to high-five Evans then later appearing to brush his hand off her waist. However, they moved to shut down all the chat during an interview on spin-off It Takes Two, with Jones saying the idea that she was offended in any way was "total nonsense".

She also admitted she couldn't bear seeing Evans "portrayed as someone he’s not".

Host Fleur East started the interview by launching into a discussion about Evans and Jones' performance at the weekend. But Jones interrupted, saying: "Sorry Fleur, sorry. I will get onto dancing I promise."

She went on: "Can I please first get something out of the way that I feel like overshadowed our performance for absolutely no reason? And quite frankly I actually can't bear sitting here watching this man being portrayed as someone he’s not. In fact it couldn't be further away from the truth.

"So I have to make this absolutely clear that the whole incident with the hand and the high five on Saturday night, it was an inside joke between Wynne and I. Was it a silly joke? Yes. Was it a bad joke? Yes."

"I have watched it back and I can see how people may have misinterpreted it," said Evans.

Jones went on: "However, it was a joke and even the idea that it made me feel uncomfortable or offended in any way, it's total nonsense and those that have doubts, you guys have got it wrong. So hopefully this will be the end of it."

Jones then moved the focus back to their dance at the weekend. The pair performed a Tango to the Abba song Money, Money, Money, and scored 34 out of 40. It saw them in joint second place on the leaderboard with Jamie Borthwick and Michelle Tsiakkas. Tasha Ghouri and Aljaž Škorjanec were at the top, with 39.

As a shot of them on the dancefloor came up, Jones gestured to Evans and said: "Look at you shining on that floor, wasn’t he incredible?"

Evans also addressed their joke on BBC Wales. "I'm absolutely heartbroken by the things that have been written about me in the last day," he said.

"It's not nice to live in that time, but basically Katya and I are really, really close and we're really good friends, and on Saturday night we made a stupid joke," said the Go Compare advert star. "It was a stupid joke that went wrong, OK? We thought it was funny. It wasn't funny. It was been totally misinterpreted."

Jones posted a message on social media saying much the same as she did on It Takes Two.

"The hand incident that happened on Saturday night was an inside - a very silly, very silly - inside joke between Wynne and I," she said. "So even the idea that it made me feel uncomfortable or offended me in any way is complete nonsense. It's quite absurd actually. Now, can we just focus on how brilliantly he's doing and what an amazing dancer he's becoming?"
