Strictly lifted Lesley's gloom at turning 70

Birds of a Feather star Lesley Joseph says her appearance on Strictly Come Dancing is rapidly whipping her into shape.

So much so that she’s even got her ‘Dorian figure’ back as a result of all those rigorous dancefloor sessions with Anton du Beke.

“I was nervous I wouldn’t be able to keep up but I’m fitter than ever,” the 70-year-old actress said ahead of last night’s show. “My thighs are like rock. I have lost half a stone already – there’s not a huge amount left.”

The actress, who is the oldest ever celeb to be paired with a pro dancer on the show, has been a massive hit on Strictly – and she’s clearly having the time of her life, crediting all that ballroom fun with lifting her gloom at turning 70-years-old.

“I found turning 70 hard,” she says. “Lots of people in the business have gone this year, life feels precious. Strictly has stopped me thinking about that. I don’t feel old. I feel about 35, though I don’t look it – especially without make-up.”

It’s not just ballroom that’s keeping Lesley busy, either. The star is also filming new episodes of Birds of a Feather for ITV, and dance partner Anton is even going to fly out to join her on location so she can keep her hand in between takes.

“I’m wearing Anton out,” she joked. “He asks if we can have a break and I tell him we can’t. I think he knows who’s wearing the trousers.”
