Punam Krishan on 'most surreal' moment of Strictly so far
She channelled her ancestry during last weekend's performance.
What did you miss?
Strictly Come Dancing duo Dr. Punam Krishan and Gorka Marquez stopped by It Takes Two for a chat with presenter Fleur East, where they reflected on last weekend's Bollywood-inspired routine.
Via the Couples' Choice, they brought Bole Chudiyan to life from the film Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, which head judge Shirley Ballas excitedly dubbed "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" whilst dressed up as Mary Poppins.
Asked by Fleur what it meant to Punam to represent her ancestral culture on primetime television, the 41-year-old admitted the whole thing was surreal.
What, how and why?
"It was one of the most beautiful moments of my life," grinned Punam, explaining that the powerful Indian drumbeat vibrated through her as she lay on the floor at the start of their performance.
"I've grown up with that music in me, but never did I imagine for that to be played out on the platform that it was played out on. And because I was lying on the floor I felt every vibration of that hit me and really felt the presence of my grandfather - it was the most surreal one minute forty seconds ever!"
As for the family's reaction to this emotional Bollywood tribute, the Morning Live star described it as "such a 360" for her mum, who worried that Punam and her younger sister would become disconnected from their culture after they were born and raised in Glasgow.
"[The Strictly dance has] been reported in all the Indian press, so for my mum really she was like, 'My girl's made it!' My dad was crying, my granny in India watched it on the television there, so it's been huge for my family," she revealed to Fleur.
What else happened on Strictly: It Takes Two?
After much speculation about the seemingly cursed Nick Knowles, who suffered two separate injuries outside of the ballroom, it was announced at the beginning of the programme that he and pro partner Luba Mushtuk would be competing in the next live show.
Strictly Come Dancing resumes on BBC One tomorrow (12 October).
