Strictly Come Dancing star Amy Dowden's cancer documentary has received a BBC release date.

Strictly Amy: Cancer and Me will debut on BBC One and the BBC iPlayer on Bank Holiday Monday – August 26, 2024 – at 8 pm.

This 60-minute film leads directly into BBC One's premiere of the second episode of the acclaimed drama series Sherwood, starring The Crown's Lesley Manville and The Walking Dead's David Morrissey.

Amy's documentary chronicles her treatment from just six days after she was diagnosed with grade III breast cancer in May 2023. Viewers will follow Amy as she goes through the difficult recovery from having a mastectomy and chemotherapy sessions, which prevented her from competing on Strictly last year.

A synopsis for Strictly Amy: Cancer and Me partially reads: "After diagnosis, Amy fears she can’t keep it secret for long. Sharing the story herself could help her control what was and wasn’t in the public domain, especially at a time when she had little power over her own health. But it is still nerve-wracking when she posts about her diagnosis on social media.

"The overwhelming support encourages Amy to keep sharing her journey online. The downside is hurtful, negative comments when she was at her lowest – even in her hospital bed. But there are highs, like messages about how her decision not to wear a wig on Strictly had shown girls and boys going through chemo that bald is beautiful.

"Alongside her family, Amy’s family at Strictly do all they can to keep her included in the glittery world of the show that means everything to her. At the live final, Amy performs in a group routine with a broken foot, and the incredible response lifts her spirits.

"This powerfully candid film follows Amy through her toughest journey, and as she pushes to return to health and back to the Strictly ballroom."

Amy finished her cancer treatment last November and has made an incredible recovery. She will be joining her fellow Strictly pros in competing on the BBC One show later this year.

The professional dancer has penned a memoir about her cancer journey called Dancing in the Rain, where she shares both the most challenging and inspiring moments from her recovery.

Strictly Come Dancing will return later this year on BBC One, while spinoff Strictly: It Takes Two airs on weeknights on BBC Two. Both shows are available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
