Strictly's Nick Knowles has birthday cake shoved in his face after DIY SOS inspired debut live dance
Strictly Come Dancing marked Nick Knowles' birthday during its first live show of the new series, surprising the TV presenter with a cake. The popular BBC One dance show is back for its 20th year but it's not without some drama, as an investigation has been initiated by the broadcaster following claims made against ex-pro dancer Giovanni Pernice by his 2023 partner Amanda Abbington.
Celebrating his 62nd, DIY SOS host Knowles alongside Luba Mushtuk kicked off the evening with a jive to 'We Built This City' by Starship. Anton Du Beke remarked their routine was "uplifting" and confessed he felt "elated" witnessing their performance, which garnered 18 points from the panel of judges.
After his dance, Nick, who lives near Cirencester, was presented with a birthday treat from pro dancer Carlos Gu who, in fitting DIY SOS attire complete with hi-vis and hard hat, comically plunged a piece of cake into Knowles' face.

In another corner of the ballroom, ex-field hockey champ Sam Quek and Nikita Kuzmin danced a foxtrot to 'Where Did Our Love Go' by The Supremes.
With a score of 23 from the judges, Quek received accolades from Motsi Mabuse for being "shining", and head judge Shirley Ballas impressed by her "attitude".
The previous weekend's launch show for Strictly was highlighted with performances from the professional dancers, among them a special routine to welcome back Amy Dowden after a year away due to breast cancer treatment.
Ahead of its new series and in light of the behavioural allegations, the BBC has announced it will implement new welfare measures, which include having a chaperone present "at all times" during rehearsals.
Strictly Come Dancing’s first live show of 2024 kicked off with a routine from the professional dancers, who dressed in colourful outfits, danced to a medley of songs. Following the opening number, hosts Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman welcomed the 15 celebrities and their dance partners to the stage and said nobody would be leaving the competition this weekend.
