Strictly Come Dancing star Sam Quek has spoken about her “heartbreaking” exit from the show, sharing that she had “more to give.”

The former hockey player and professional partner Nikita Kuzmin exited the competition in the seventh week, with the pair losing out to Montell Douglas and Johannes Radebe in Sunday’s (November 3) dance off.

Appearing opposite Fleur East on Monday’s (November 4) episode of It Takes Two, Sam and Nikita spoke about their stint in the competition, with the former – a Gold medal-winning Olympian – explaining that the past couple of days had been “strange.”

“It’s been a strange 48 hours,” she began. “It’s a bit weird coming back and being in this situation, but ultimately I am still proud of what I achieved. I’m going to miss this guy every single day, but I’ve got no regrets.

“I’m mega proud but I still wasn’t ready to go – I feel like I could’ve given more. But that’s the nature of the competition,” continued Sam, with Nikita echoing her sentiments as he proclaimed that their journey had “ended too soon.”

“From our side, the most important thing was seeing Sam improve each week and dance her heart out,” he said. “Strictly is about putting yourself out there. Obviously we went home so it’s not such a happy ending but I’m still mega proud.”

Sam, whose final dance was the American smooth, subsequently elaborated on how her professional sports career informed her experience on the show, explaining that her competitive spirit did lead to some “heartbreak.”

“In hindsight, I probably thought I could achieve more things as a dancer,” she remarked. “Sometimes when I got on the dancefloor, gave it my all and maybe didn’t get what I thought I deserved or wanted, it was a bit of a heartbreak.

“I’m not afraid and I don’t think anybody should ever feel ashamed at wanting to win or be the best at something. It’s always been in my make up and throughout my family – we work hard and the rest should happen.”

Strictly Come Dancing airs on Saturdays on BBC One, while spin-off Strictly: It Takes Two airs on weeknights on BBC Two. Both shows are available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
