Hall gave no reaction as a jury at Preston Crown Court cleared him of 15 counts of rape and four of indecent assault, convicting him of just one count of indecent assault. Detectives and Crown Prosecution Service lawyers looked ashen-faced after the innocent verdicts were read out to the court. "At the beginning of this trial he pleaded guilty to an indecent assault against one of the girls when she was intoxicated and at home in bed and today he has been found guilty by a jury of a further indecent assault in relation to the same victim," they said. Jamaican-born Hall was one of the left's leading influential figures, who brought issues of race, sexuality, identity and the media into academic debate. The term, in reference to activists, educators and agitators, brought reforms to abortion, gay rights, gender roles and drug use, in addition to the established movements on social class and social justice. Hall also coined the term "Thatcherism", associated with the rise of the new Right before Margaret Thatcher became prime minister in 1979. A regular contributor to Marxism Today, Hall warned those on the left in 1979 not to dismiss the appeal of the fledgling Thatcherism.
