Outrage after students wearing blackface share post mocking Black Lives Matter movement

A group of students are under investigation after a picture emerged of them in blackface with the caption “Black Lives Matter”.

The image, which was originally posted to Snapchat at The University of North Dakota, has been widely circulated.

It is the second image of a racial nature to originate from the campus in a matter of days.

A picture of three white students with the caption “Locked the black b**** out” was also previously shared on Snapchat.

The images have been widely condemned, with the university’s president Mark Kennedy describing them as “inexcusable”.

“I am appalled that within 48 hours two photos with racially charged messages have been posted on social media and associated with the University of North Dakota campus community,” he said in the statement.

“It is abundantly clear that we have much work to do at the University of North Dakota in educating our students, and the entire University community on issues related to diversity, inclusion, and respect for others.”

“I have been disappointed to learn that we have people in our university community who don’t know that the kind of behaviour and messaging demonstrated in these two photos is not OK, and that, in fact, it is inexcusable,” he said.

Both the University of North Dakota Police Department and the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities are conducting investigations into the incidents.

As the New York Daily News points out, just 2.5% of the university’s students are black. The overwhelming majority — more than 78% — are white.

Earlier this month, a white student was kicked out of Kansas State University after posting a blackface selfie on Snapchat.
