'I was stung by jellyfish at Formby beach - but it's still the best in the UK'

I didn't have the best time at Formby Beach

According to a recent study analysing Tripadvisor reviews, Formby has been designated as one of the poorest rated beaches in the UK. The research by Preply took into account the most one, two and three-star ratings given by visitors, placing Formby as the seventh most underwhelming beach in the country.

Preply reports that 124 out of 707 reviewers provided lacklustre feedback about their experiences at Formby Beach on TripAdvisor. Despite this, I remained certain after my own dismal day at Formby Beach that these 124 individuals are mistaken.

A few years ago, during a rare solitary day, I opted for a trip to absorb some Vitamin D and take a dip in the Irish Sea at Formby. Everything was enjoyable until I endured an attack by a swarm of jellyfish.

To say "attacked" feels entirely accurate; initially there were no jellyfish, then suddenly they seemed omnipresent. Initially stung by one on my right arm, then both upper legs were hit.

And I had only been eight minutes in the water. At first, it wasn't too bad, akin to a wasp sting, but by nightfall, my arms were aflame, and I began to see red marks, reports the Liverpool Echo.

By the next day, and for several days afterwards, I had angry red welts across my upper arm and both legs.

Not only was it painful, but I also felt incredibly self-conscious, particularly as the incident occurred during a period of hot weather, making it difficult to keep the stings concealed. It took over a week for the stings to completely heal, so it's safe to say that particular beach day is not one I remember with fondness.

However, jellyfish are found all across the UK, and this incident hasn't deterred me from returning to Formby Beach. I've visited numerous times since.

Formby's sandy stretches extend for miles, complemented by stunning sand dunes and vast expanses of woodland. In my opinion, it's one of the most picturesque spots in the UK, and without a doubt, the best beach.
