With one of the most underwhelming summers in memory coming to an end, the month of September offers drier weather, sunshine and the changing of the seasons.

The months when Scotland is at its most beautiful (in our opinion), autumn is when the forests and countryside around Glasgow suddenly become a wash with reds, ambers and golds.

An ideal time for a wee day away from the city, one spot not too far from Glasgow – a 55-minute drive to be exact – Dollar Glen in Clackmannanshire offers a sublime autumn adventure.

One of Scotland's most "amazing" autumn walks, according to the National Trust for Scotland, the route is a haven for wildlife, breathtaking scenery and huge trees and rolling hills – as well as a cracking country pub at the end.

The woodland walk, which lies to the east of Stirling and is nestled below the expansive Ochil Hills, is where you'll find dramatic gorges and babbling brooks as well as the 15th-century Castle Campbell for the little history lovers in the family, the Record reports.

It's also the ideal place to see rarer bird species such as green woodpeckers and magical dippers – little songbirds with a love for water – as well as red squirrels and even the odd pine marten if you're extremely lucky.

The Dollar Glen walk can be easily reached on foot from Dollar via the Mill Green. It should take around 90 minutes in total to complete, or around two hours if you visit Castle Campbell.

And don't worry if you need to refuel after all of that meandering, make a beeline for The Forager gastropub in Dollar itself, which has been described in customer reviews on review site The Fork as having "the best Sunday roast" ever. Recently taken over by top chef Dean Banks and his teams and offers menus packed with pub favourites, pizza and even a special kids menu with dishes priced at £8 (comes with a dessert).

And don't worry, it's dog-friendly in the bar areas too, meaning your four-legged faves can join you.
