An Essex hotel has been named among the country's best after coming out on top in the East of England Tourism Awards. Wivenhoe House Hotel, on Park Road, was given the lofty title in the 2023/24 awards.

The hotel, set in the grounds of Wivenhoe Park, has a rich history dating back many years. It survived a devastating earthquake in 1884 and, according to the hotel, famous visitors include the late Queen Elizabeth II and late Nelson Mandela.

Wivenhoe House Hotel has a variety of rooms available to guests with differing prices too. A classic room (£120 per night) is spacious and could provide views of the courtyard; at the other end of the spectrum is the luxury room (£230 per night) which is said to be "a popular choice for those seeking relaxed luxury, getting away with the family or for a special occasion".

A recent TripAdvisor said "there's lots to commend this hotel for". There were also mentions for the "lovely old building, super large comfy room, very comfy bed, large bathroom with great shower and good tea/coffee making facilities".

The bedrooms appear to be spacious in size with large beds and sometimes floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook the surrounding countryside. In some of the rooms there are even large dressing tables to sit and work at or get ready for the day from.

As well as rooms to book for visits, there are also large spaces for conferences and celebrations such as weddings. One large open room has previously been pictured having been decorated with white table and seat covers and pink decorations.

Regardless of whether you are visiting to stay the night, for a conference or celebration there is also the offer of incredible looking food options. That could be their stylish afternoon tea or their hearty and regionally-produced menu of foods that are "guaranteed to tickle those taste buds".

Wivenhoe House Hotel is surrounded by the beautiful scene of Wivenhoe Nature Park, close to Colchester. It's also close enough to the Essex coast for a trip to the seaside.

Wivenhoe House Hotel was named 'Large Hotel of the Year' in the East of England Tourism Awards 2023-2024. The full list of other awards and winners can be found here.
