Su Pollard says Ruth Madoc’s ghost played a trick on her when she was onstage in a pantomime.

The 73-year-old actress felt the spirit of her late 'Hi-De-Hi' co-star - who passed away at the age of 79 in 2022 - and paid tribute to her when she was in 'Jack and the Beanstalk' in Cheshire, 40 years after they met on the classic 80s sitcom that followed the antics at Maplin’s holiday camp in Crimpton-on-Sea.

She told the Daily Star Sunday newspaper: “I made a little speech at the end. As I said, ‘Thank you so much, she would’ve been delighted with the tributes’, my crown went forward on my head.

“I said, ‘Ruth is watching us. She’s not quite ready to settle into heaven yet’. The audience applauded – it was fabulous.”

Su labelled Ruth’s death “such a shock” and how she found out just before she tread the boards in the festive stage show at Northwich Memorial Theatre in Cheshire.

She continued: “It was ever such a shock. It was terrible. I was about to do panto and I got a phone call to say Ruth had broken her leg.

“I found out what hospital she was in and I phoned her. And then a few days later she was gone.

“It was tragic, but it made me think about life. I thought, ‘OK girl, I’m going to live for you’. The thing is, I’m 73. Hopefully, I’ll live a long, long time. But by the law of averages, I could be, sadly, not with us in 10 years’ time.

“So you have to really enjoy what’s to come and embrace everything. Because you just never know.”

“You’ve got to grab opportunities. It’s no good being fearful. Give something a go if you think you can do it."

“I don’t mind doing anything so long as it’s fun. Today won’t come again, so enjoy it.”
