Su Pollard tells those on 'PC bandwagon' to 'get real'

Su Pollard has said she believes modern comedy is too politically correct and people only get offended so “their tweet appears on TV”.

Pollard found fame in popular 1980s sitcom He-de-Hi, but feels modern comedy is too PC.

She told the Daily Star: “There’s so many people on the politically-correct bandwagon now.

“We were used to saying certain things and it was just water off a duck’s back. If you’ve grown up saying certain words then you still have it in your psyche. It’s good to be aware of being offensive, but you have to know where to draw the line.

“I think nowadays you get people who are offended but don’t really know why. Or they want to be seen to look offended so their tweet appears on TV and they look controversial. I sometimes think: ‘What’s the matter with you? Get real!’”

The 70-year-old star was also spoke the possibility of rebooting Hi-de-Hi, an idea she describes as “a vanity project”.

She played chalet maid Peggy on the show for a number of year and says the show acted as a “springboard to other things”.

She went on to enjoy staring roles in You Rang M’Lord and Oh, Doctor Beeching.

Despite being known for her light-hearted roles, Pollard is about to swap comedy for serious drama as she undertakes a tour of a one-woman-play called Harpy.

The production sees her playing a mentally-ill hoarder called Birdie, a much more serious role than that of Ivy Stokes the maid in You Rang M’Lord.

Pollard says she is looking forward to the role as it is “tackling something that used to be taboo”.

In recent years Pollard has made guest appearances on comedies such as Gimme, Gimme, Gimme and Benidorm.

She also took part in Strictly Come Dancing in 2011.
