Murderer Steve Wright, known as the ‘Suffolk Strangler’, has been arrested in connection with the unsolved murder of 17-year-old Victoria Hall in 1999.

The 63-year-old is serving a whole life sentence for killing five women and was arrested at Long Lartin prison in Worcestershire on Wednesday, The Telegraph reports.

Miss Hall, from Trimley St Mary, was reported missing after she did not return home from a nightclub in Felixstowe, Suffolk, in September 1999.

Five days later her naked body was found in a ditch in Creeting St Peter, some 25 miles away from where she was last seen alive.

A post-mortem examination revealed the teenager had been strangled to death and Wright, a former steward on the QE2, was known to have been living in the area at the time.

He had never previously been arrested in connection with Miss Hall’s murder but was convicted of murdering his victims in the Ipswich area between October 30 and December 10, 2006.

Miss Hall was last seen alive in the early hours of September 19, 1999, in her home town after walking back from a night out with a friend in Felixstowe.

Her friend last saw her within yards of her home but the 17-year-old never made it inside. Her parents reported her missing later that morning.

In 2001, the owner of the local Felixstowe Flyer newspaper, Adrian Bradshaw, faced trial for her murder but a jury took less than 90 minutes to find him not guilty.

Suffolk Police have since reopened the investigation and a new team of detectives have been focusing on the circumstances surrounding her death since 2019.

A spokesman for the force told The Telegraph: “In September 2019, Suffolk Police revealed that the case - known as Operation Avon - was now a live inquiry again and being fully reinvestigated by a new team of detectives, after fresh information had been received that was not previously known.

“As a result of the work that has been ongoing for the past two years, officers have arrested a man on suspicion of murder on the morning of Wednesday 28 July.

“He has been taken into police custody where he currently remains for questioning. This individual is not someone who has previously been arrested as part of this inquiry.”

They added on Thursday that the suspect had been released under investigation pending further inquiries and said they continue to appeal for witnesses with information.
