A Suitable Boy finale spoilers follow.
A Suitable Boy viewers were left torn by one protagonist's choice of partner in the show's series one finale.
The six-part drama, which is based on Vikram Seth's 1993 novel of the same name, partly follows Lata Mehra (played by newcomer Tanya Maniktala), an enthusiastic university student who finds herself unable to pick between three potential suitors; "honourable" shoe manufacturer Haresh (Namit Das), aspiring writer Amit (Mikhail Sen) and Muslim "hunk" Kabir (Danesh Razvi).
In tonight's conclusion (August 24), she opted for the former, which left some fans thrilled and others disappointed.
"What a delightful ending to A Suitable Boy: Lata made the right decision in choosing Harish – the sweetest, most honourable and solid man imaginable – 'he's so real... his feet touch the ground'. Hurray! Such a lovely production," one satisfied viewer wrote on Twitter after the instalment ended.
"In the end Lata was a shrewd business woman. Love was not as important to her as a secure and stable future," a second analysed. "She rarely uttered words of love and compassion. For Lata, love was just transactional."
"I think #ASuitableBoy should have been adapted to a narrative more in tune with acceptance in 2020 where a Hindu and Muslim can get married if they want to and a man and ex-prostitute can marry no matter what age she is," another argued. "A lot of this series has had me rolling my eyes."

Absolutely loved watching #ASuitableBoy a wonderful series. Lata was right to choose the shoemaker, he will always put her first.— Steve Waldron (@Stevewal63) August 24, 2020
Lata chose to go with the hard working Haresh, leaving the dreamers behind. It was a happy ending, thoroughly enjoyed it #ASuitableBoy— ...💗... (@MsRandeepHooda) August 24, 2020
Loved the ending to #ASuitableBoy and Lata’s ending. She says it herself the quieter love is the one that allows her to be herself. And when you grow up a little you realise passion has it’s place but like your first love, it can be a distant memory in the reality of life.— Humaira | Book Blogger (@bookishconnect) August 24, 2020
