Suited Passengers Disembark in Hong Kong as International Airport Extends Foreign Arrivals Ban Indefinitely

Passengers in protective suits and masks disembarked a flight from London to Hong Kong on April 6 only hours before Hong Kong extended its ban on foreign arrivals, indefinitely.

Matt Tam, who took this video, told Storyful the passengers had purchased the suits themselves prior to the flight, as they were concerned about the number of new coronavirus cases in Hong Kong which they believed had been brought into the region by residents returning from the United Kingdom.

Hong Kong had not allowed foreign arrivals since March 25.

Hong Kong had moved to restrict international travellers early in the COVID-19 outbreak, and had banned anyone who had been to China’s Hubei province in the 14 days prior on January 27 from entering. Hubei’s capital city Wuhan was where the coronavirus was first detected.

There were at least 915 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Hong Kong on April 7, with nearly three-quarters of infections in the past fortnight coming from imported cases, according to media reports. Credit: mr.matt.tam via Storyful
