Suits star Gina Torres has joined the cast of 9-1-1: Lone Star, and will appear in a series regular role when the crisis drama returns for season two.

According to Fox (via The Wrap), the actor is set to play Tommy Vega, a paramedic captain who "was at the top of her game when she hung up her uniform to raise her twin daughters".

Eight years on, and with her husband's restaurant going under due to COVID-19, she comes out of early retirement to help combat the pandemic from the frontline.

"Though it breaks her heart to be apart from her little girls, Tommy will show the world that no matter how much time has passed, when she puts on that uniform, she's still a boss," the official character breakdown concluded.

"We are so excited to be expanding our 9-1-1-verse with the addition of Gina Torres," showrunner Tim Minear – who previously worked with Torres on Joss Whedon's Firefly series back in the early 2000s – said in a statement.

"I've been dying to write for her again. Gina brings warmth, intelligence and command to everything she does. 2020 is finally looking up."

Production on season two is expected to kick off in Austin, Texas later this year, ahead of broadcast in early 2021.

9-1-1: Lone Star airs on FOX in the US and Sky Witness in the UK.
