Summer cost of living payments of at least £75 will arrive in some bank accounts in July. Money will be available to help struggling families through the Household Support Fund this summer.

Cash has been given to local councils by the Government to allow them to decide who is most in need of support. Each local authority will operate HSFs in different ways and some may make cash payments to those who meet the criteria.

A West Midlands council has now issued a major update on how its fund will work. It will include cash payments to parents who receive council tax reduction and have a dependent child living with them.

Walsall Council said payments of £75 PER CHILD "will be paid directly into your bank account" at the end of July. Other local authorities have begun confirming details of how their funds will work.

To find out if you could be eligible for cash payments or other support check your council's household support fund page. Successful applicants usually have to prove they are suffering financial hardship and it is likely you will have to be receiving some form of means-tested benefit, though some councils make decisions on a case-by-case basis.

In a new update, Walsall Council said: "Councils across the country have been provided with funding through the Household Support Scheme. This is to support households on a low income with food and utilities whilst the cost of living is increasing.

"The Government has extended funding for a further six months from April to September 2024. This will be used to support our most vulnerable residents. You’ll receive a one off direct payment of £75 per child at the end of July 2024 if:

  • you are in receipt of Council Tax Reduction, and

  • have dependent children living with you

"This will be paid directly into your bank account. If you’re eligible for this payment you don’t need to make a separate application."
