We’ve already seen frost and hail this week, so it’s no surprise to learn that the weather this Bank Holiday weekend is likely to be mixed.

According to the latest reports from the Met Office, the weekend is set to start “largely dry and bright” UK-wide, with sunshine forecast across many areas of England, including London and the South-east.

Showers are likely in Scotland and Northern Ireland however, though they should only be fleeting.

But, this being a Bank Holiday weekend, the (mostly) strong start isn’t expected to last.

“Breezier” weather is predicted throughout the UK on Sunday, with “outbreaks of rain likely later”.

The Met Office concludes that the weather is likely to become “windier through Sunday and Monday with rain spreading up from the south west, although drier across Scotland. Becoming warmer.”

The Weather Channel is predicting a more dramatic turn of events however, saying: “Parts of the country are set for a Bank Holiday soaking as the UK is split by two separate weather systems during the weekend.

“The divide will see frequent showers in the north and west, while the south and east will be slightly warmer with the chance of some sunshine and milder than of late. Much of Scotland and Ireland will also enjoy above average temperatures on Monday.

“Sunday afternoon is expected to be wet in the north and this weather will continue on Monday and into next week as a weakening cold front moves across Europe.”

Highs of 14C are expected in the south and east of the UK, and forecaster Katie Greening, of The Weather Channel, said: “The weekend looks set to be milder than of late, albeit unsettled and wet as deep low pressure arrives immediately to the west of the UK.”

Might be best to put the barbie back in the shed for now, then. Fingers crossed the Spring Bank Holiday on May 28 brings the glorious sunshine we’re all longing for.
