Sunak defends Biden after he ‘wandered off’ at G7 event

Rishi Sunak has denied claims Joe Biden “wandered off” at a G7 event.

The US president had appeared distracted when world leaders gathered to take part in a group photograph.

Video of the event shows him being brought back by Giorgia Meloni, the Right-wing Italian prime minister.

Asked in Puglia, Italy, where he is attending the G7 summit, about whether Mr Biden was ok, Mr Sunak replied: “Yes. He went to go and talk to the pilot, one of the parachute jumpers.

“He went to go and shake all their hands.

“They all landed and he was being very polite and went over to talk to all of them individually, and Giorgia was saying don’t worry they’re all coming – we were meant to line up and they were coming to shake our hands.”

He added: “As far as I know he went over to talk to some of the parachute jumpers, saying thank you or hello to them all individually, and then we all lined up and they all came and lined up.

“Everyone wanted to talk to the person who jumped with their flag. I had a chat with the person with the British flag. That’s what everyone wanted to do.”

The Prime Minister said he was also planning to watch the Scotland match overnight.

“We are trying to figure out where we can put a TV,” he said.

The video taken on the first day of the G7 appeared to show the 81-year-old president losing focus and drifting away from leaders during a photo op with parachutists.

He turned to his left and approached an officer packing a parachute, giving the man a thumbs-up.

Ms Meloni intervened to guide him back to the main proceedings. The two leaders then posed for a photo, with Mr Biden slowly putting on his signature aviator sunglasses.
