Super League Dream Team announced as Wigan and Warrington players dominate
The 2024 Super League Dream Team has been announced, with Wigan Warriors leading the way with four player inclusions. The Cherry and Whites secured the League Leaders Shield on Thursday night and are also the reigning Challenge Cup, World Club Challenge, and Super League holders.
Wigan and England centre Jake Wardle is the only player from the 2023 Dream Team to retain his place, with prop forward Luke Thompson also selected, having been in the 2019 edition while a St Helens player. Elsewhere, Liam Marshall is included for the first time after a prolific Super League season. The winger has scored 27 tries to date, while Junior Nsemba has also been rewarded for a breakthrough year in the back-row.
Meanwhile, Warrington Wolves have three players in the Dream Team. The Wire finished third under Sam Burgess and take on St Helens in an elimination play-off tie this Saturday. Matt Dufty takes the full-back spot. He is the only Australian in the team, with England internationals Matty Ashton on the wing and Danny Walker at hooker.
The remaining six players are split between Hull KR, Salford Red Devils, St Helens, and Leeds Rhinos. The Robins and Red Devils have two each, while there is a single Saint and Rhino.
Two members of the Robins' spine are selected, with Mikey Lewis at half-back and Elliot Minchella at loose-forward. Both players are expected to be involved in England's Test series against Samoa this autumn.
Salford, who finished fourth, are represented through Nene Macdonald at centre and Marc Sneyd at half-back, while Saints prop Matty Lees has been recognised for a strong season. Leeds' departing Papua New Guinean international Rhyse Martin completes the line-up as the other back rower and is the only player to be selected that doesn't represent a top six club.
As always, the Dream Team was selected by the same panel of experts who determined the Man of Steel. The players will be represented with their shirts by Paul Sculthorpe at an event on Monday.
