Pints, meals and haircuts as England's lockdown eased

It is the day England took its first, tentative steps back out to normal life. Out to pubs. Out to restaurants. Out to hairdressers. Out into the, er, overcast, windy English summer. Read how the country emerged from its "long hibernation" with a Super Saturday of reopenings that included pubs, beer gardens, restaurants, hairdressers and cinemas. Long queues formed outside hair salons and barbers, in particular, as lockdown locks were finally trimmed. Many venues asked customers to provide details so they could be contacted in the event of an outbreak. Kent Police were contacted after Nigel Farage visited a pub in an apparent breach of quarantine rules following a visit to America. On its first night of eased restrictions, will England enjoy an evening of sensible fun - or total drunken chaos? Follow the latest updates and pictures in our liveblog.

We sent a whole host of Telegraph writers to put the "new normal" to the test. Read how they got on in pubs, salons, hotels, theme parks and churches. What are you doing to mark England's "independence day"? If you fill out this short form, you could feature in an article on our website. And, as a reminder, here is our simple guide to the new rules - what you can, cannot - and probably should not - do in England from today.

The great escape: Staycations come back to life

England's tourism industry is waking from its slumber. Traffic cameras showed busy service station car parks, congested motorways and caravans making their way towards coastal spots. As hotels, guest houses and self-catering accommodation reopened across the land, we posted reporters in all corners of the country - from Cornwall to the Lake District, Alton Towers to the Isles of Scilly. Our travel liveblog has their best videos, pictures and insights - including from Greg Dickinson, who left home at 5am to avoid the traffic to Penzance, and Natalie Paris, who got stuck behind a fair few caravans en route to Dorset. Landlords fear cross-border pub 'raids' for a drink

It seems fitting that divisions over the approach of each nation of the UK to the coronavirus pandemic should come to be symbolised by the desire for a good drink. With many English pubs now open for the first time since lockdown, the continued closure of their own is expected to lead to cross-border "raids" by drinkers from Wales and Scotland. Patrick Sawer reports on police warnings that they will enforce their own guidelines if drinkers try to sneak a cheeky drink across the border. Read how lockdown rules differ in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
